Empowering Parents: Unleashing Parent Power for Students to Thrive, Including Struggling Learners

September 11, 2023

Introduction:

As the 2023-2024 academic year approaches, there is an atmosphere of excitement as schools and families gear up for another transformative journey. Parents/guardians play a crucial role in shaping their children’s educational experience and ensuring their success. Regardless of their background or circumstances, all parents hold the power to make a significant impact on their child’s education. As an empty nester, I recall the importance of the Parent Resource Guide or the Parent and Student Responsibility Manual in preparing for each school year. This document serves as a beacon of knowledge, empowering all parents, including those with struggling learners, to actively engage in their child’s educational journey.

Harnessing the Power of Parent Resources:

Empowering all parents with access to the Parent Resource Guide is crucial, especially for students having an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), a 504 Plan, or a Health Care Plan. This invaluable document is a goldmine, offering an abundance of resources and information that lays out the path for parent empowerment and student success at all grade levels. It provides insights into school goals, contact information for schools within the district, graduation requirements, and procedures for interacting with school staff. For parents of struggling learners, this guide also provides crucial information about individualized accommodations and services tailored to their child’s unique needs.

Understanding Parental Rights:

Equipping parents/guardians with information about their rights as they relate to their child’s upbringing, education, and care is essential. This knowledge allows parents, including those with students having IEPs, 504’s, and Health Care Plans for physical and mental health, to advocate effectively for their child’s needs and well-being. The Parents’ Bill of Rights, a state law (Chapter 1014), is designed to protect these rights and should be readily available to all parents, fostering a sense of empowerment and partnership with the educational system.

Promoting Student Success:
Your Role Matters!

Parents, as the primary advocates for their children, play a crucial role in ensuring their success. Here are a few essential actions for parents to support their child’s growth and achievement:

  1. The Guide/Manual: Contact your school to request a copy of the Parent’s Resource Guide/Manual. Share the information with your child(ren) according to their grade level and with other parents.
  2. Engage in School Activities: Attend parent-teacher conferences and school events to stay involved in your child’s education and understand their progress.
  3. Join Parent Associations: Participate in Parent-Teacher-Student Associations (PTSA) or Parent Teacher Organizations (PTO) to connect with other parents and teachers and stay up-to-date about informative activities, programs, and scholarships.
  4. Volunteer and Get Involved: Participate in a variety of ways, such as volunteering; mentoring; or joining local organizations; to contribute positively to your child’s school community.
  5. Engage in Learning at Home: Support your child’s learning by spending time reading with them, assisting with homework, or educational activities.

As we approach the new school year, let us empower all parents, recognizing that every parent’s involvement is a crucial factor in their child’s educational journey and overall success, including those with struggling learners.
